Why Creativity is the Greatest Act of Rebellion Right Now

Creativity has always been my lifeline, though I didn’t realise it until recently. Because it has always been my go-to for processing, I didn’t realise either how many people feel painfully disconnected from theirs. It makes sense that it hurts: creativity is our essence. “The natural order of life,” as Julia Cameron puts it. “Life is energy: pure creative energy.”

And yet so many of us were told, directly or indirectly, that creativity was frivolous or without value. I grew up in a family that measured worth by price tags, where anything made by hand and heart was dismissed. The message was clear: money = value; creativity = none.

Can you relate?

These messages are bullsh!t born of fear and the desire to control. We’re living in a moment where value is put on doing rather than being, productivity is worshipped, and exhaustion is worn like a badge of honour.

In a world that’s constantly trying to pull you outward — into comparison, consumption, proving yourself — turning inward is a radical act. It interrupts the narrative that your worth is measured by output. It reminds you that you are more than your roles, your responsibilities, or your performance. That your value is intrinsic.

There’s deep healing in allowing what you create to be imperfect. Perfectionism doesn’t find space for the messy parts of us, or for play. Give voice to all of the parts of you, and let that expression be transformative.

Creativity and Well-Being

Creative expression changes the way your brain functions. Research consistently shows that it supports emotional regulation, reduces stress, and improves overall wellbeing. Many of us intuitively use creativity as a form of processing — a moving meditation –  feeling and moving the emotions instead of suppressing them. Science simply confirms what the intelligence of the body already knows: that creative practices help people feel more expressive, more grounded, and more attuned to their inner world.

Connection

Creating without a goal softens the parts of you that have been hardened by pace and pressure. It reawakens your imagination — the part of you that can still see possibility, still dream, still play. And when you reclaim that part of yourself, you become harder to manipulate, harder to numb, harder to disconnect from your own truth.

That’s why creativity is rebellious: Creativity Reconnects You With Yourself  bringing you back to your sovereignty. Choosing to create is a refusal to abandon yourself, giving you back your voice, your agency, your inner authority. You hear your own voice beneath the noise. And when more people are truly listening, the culture shifts towards authenticity.

And when we co-create, creativity becomes a powerful source of connection and community.

What nourishes your soul inevitably nourishes the whole.

Building a Daily Creative Practice

A creative practice doesn’t need to be grand. Small, consistent acts are far more sustainable.

I recommend setting your alarm thirty minutes earlier and, before you engage with the world, write three pages. This is from Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way.It helps to get all the things getting between you and your creativity out of the way. These pages aren’t meant to be reread: they’re more of a brain-purge to clear space.

Then we need to put something back in. Once a week take yourself on what Cameron calls an Artist Date. This is anything you want it to be – something playful, frivolous, whatever you want it to be. The only rule is to not let anyone tag along. This is you time.

If this feels too much, then try doodling, making a collage, baking, or rearranging objects in your environment. The goal isn’t necessarily to make something beautiful. It’s to notice how it feels to give yourself space.

Gratitude

This part’s important! End each session with an acknowledgement and a thank you to yourself. In a world that constantly asks you to abandon your needs, you chose you! Honour that. This reinforces that your inner world and your well-being matter.

So my invitation to you: choose one small creative act today. Pick up a pen, a brush, a roll of wire – and play.

No rules. Just you, your curiosity, and the space you’ve always deserved.

And if you feel ready to explore this more deeply, to reconnect with your creativity in a held, nourishing space, I’d love to welcome you into one of my workshops or retreats
